The Third Annual Leonard Abrams Memorial Lecture
“The Impact of Esthetic Dentistry in 2007”
Most dentists agree that the clinical practice of Esthetic Restorative Dentistry has entered the “Age of Interdisciplinary dentistry” which demands a team approach. The “Academics” of our profession insist we move towards “evidence based” materials, techniques and treatment protocols, and our dental schools are heeding this. How do we bring these major trends together when we are engaged in the Examination, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning process? Isn’t this the key to excellent results “by design” rather than “by accident?”
Joseph R. Greenberg, D.M.D. Received his dental degree from Penn Dental School and was certified in Fixed Prosthodontics/Periodontal Prosthesis. He has been a Clinical Professor of Periodontics at University of Pennsylvania for over 35 years. He was recognized for his dedication and excellence when he received the Special Alumni Award of Merit in 2002. He is currently teaching at Temple University School of Dentistry, where he has been appointed Course Director of Advanced Restorative Dentistry for the senior dental students. A Fellow of the Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, and Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics as well as the AGD, he has published over 20 original papers and lectured nationally and internationally throughout his career.
Monday, October 22, 2007 Dr. Lawrence M. Levin
Advanced Surgical Techniques: Alveolar Augmentation for Implant Site Development
Implant dentistry is driven by prosthetic considerations. It is no longer acceptable to place implants wherever we find available bone. To achieve functional and cosmetically acceptable tooth replacements, bone augmentation procedures to develop sites for dental implants, are essential elements in achieving successful outcomes. Various augmentation techniques to rehabilitate the atrophic alveolus will be discussed. Diagnosis, treatment planning and anatomic factors form the basis for the selection of various surgical protocols. Specific procedures including socket preservation, onlay grafting, mandibular graft harvesting techniques, alveolar distraction, and the management of surgical complications will be covered in detail.
Lawrence M. Levin, D.M.D., M. D. received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental medicine and his medical degree from The Medical College of Pennsylvania. He completed Residency Training at Penn and is Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Levin serves as Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and is also Chief of Dentistry at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Monday, November 19, 2007 Dr. Albert S. Chinappi, Jr.
The Dentition as an Orthotic: An Orthopedic Approach to Orthodontics, Posture and the TMJ
Careful analysis of clinically reproducible results in adolescent functional jaw orthopedics has led to a new understanding of what actually occurs during orthodontic treatment. These changes, characterized by alterations in cranio-mandibular position, have led to creative alternatives in the treatment of adults. Management of maxillary jaw width as well as vertical posterior face height can lead to dramatic changes in the postural dynamic. These changes have a profound effect not only on the occlusion, but multiple associated symptoms we now understand are associated with poor posture.
Albert S. Chinappi, D.D.S., M.S. A Board Certified Orthodontist, with thirty years of private practice experience, graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry, and acquired specialty training at Fairleigh Dickenson University, focusing on the growth and development of the face. Dr. Chinappi started practice utilizing long-established orthodontic techniques until the late 70’s, when he transformed his traditional practice, and embraced functional orthodontics. Since then, he has become a leader in the field and in particular, its application to the growth and development of children, as well as its application to adult patients with head and jaw pain. Al is currently a Clinical Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine.

New Vistas in Endodontics: "Revascularization of the Immature Tooth"
Pulp necrosis of an immature permanent tooth from caries or trauma arrests further development and leaves the tooth with thin, weak walls that are prone to fracture. Endodontic treatment of such a tooth is difficult due to the open apex and thin root walls. A new modality of treatment of such teeth, "revascularization", has been considered a paradigm shift in treatment. The use of intra-canal disinfection with antibiotics and the stimulation of a blood clot, have been shown to encourage the ingrowth of tissue from the periapical area thereby allowing for continued root development. This presentation will review the biologic processes of revascularization and demonstrate the concept with clinical cases.
In addition to other important breakthroughs in diagnosis and clinical practice, this presentation will review contemporary requirements of endodontic root filling materials to achieve the highest success possible.
Frederic Barnett, D.M.D. Received his dental degree and specialty certification in Endodontics from The University Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He has been certified by the American Board of Endodontics for more than 20 years. He has served as the Director of Postdoctoral Endodontics at Penn, and is currently Chairman and Program Director of Postdoctoral Endodontics at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Dr. Barnett has written numerous scientific and clinical papers and has lectured nationally and internationally, and maintains a part-time private practice limited to Endodontics. He currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Dental Traumatology journal and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Endodontics.
Martin Trope, B.D.S. Received his dental degree from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa and his D.M.D. and specialty certification in Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Trope has served as Chairman, Department of Endodontology at Temple University School of Dentistry. More recently he has served as the JB Freedland Professor of Endodontics at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. He is editor-in-chief of two journals, Dental Traumatology and Endodontic Topics. Monday, April 14, 2008 “Mystery Speaker”
“Strutting Our Stuff: Lessons Learned and Successes Savored”
Successful navigation of formidable clinical conundrums is the result of team effort and coordinated, multidisciplinary patient management. Rugged individualism in dental practice has succumbed to the emergence of a new paradigm: “All of us are better than any one of us, in meeting the daunting challenges of clinical ambiguity and questions resistant to clear cut answers.” This program will celebrate our study club membership’s shared successes, unconditional commitment to excellence, and hopes and expectations for the future.
“Mystery Speaker” Clothed in secrecy and selected for his extreme inscrutability, he is noted for his commitment to anonymity, obscurity and vagueness. Having strong multidisciplinary academic credentials and high visibility, the “Mystery Speaker” is a well regarded, extensively published speaker. The “MS” is frequently quoted, the recipient of numerous awards, strongly involved in organized and disorganized dentistry, and has been featured on major podiums in this country and abroad. He is noted for being on the “cutting” and “non-cutting” edge of his specialty, throughout his illustrious career.

Making It Easy for Patients to Say “Yes” is designed for dentists and team members who want to enjoy improved case acceptance for complex dentistry – cosmetic, implant and restorative dentistry.

Now, more than ever before the dentist and team need a predictable process for leading their patients towards good dental health care decisions.

- How to determine whether your patient is ready for complex care
