Cosmetic Consortium Study Club 2009-2010
The Cosmetic Consortium Study Club was founded by Dr. I. Stephen Brown, in 2000, to fulfill the perceived need for a Philadelphia organization devoted to the study of cosmetic dentistry. The membership represents a cross section of private practice dentists from the Delaware Valley who share a commitment to excellence in clinical dentistry.
The group meets for six evening presentations and one all-day program presented in the spring of each year. Over the past seven years the Study Club has included presentations by some of the most highly regarded names in our profession. These clinicians, who represent both academia and private practice, have explored a vast array of interesting topics that, in almost every case, have a level of relevance which is immediately applicable to every-day clinical practices.
Local dental icons have included Morton Amsterdam, Leonard Abrams, Arnold Weisgold and Orhan Tuncay. The Annual Meeting has featured luminaries such as Donald Callan, Steven Chu, Mark Pitel, Neal Starr and Norman Feigenbaum, Paul Homoly and Ross Nash, who have been drawn from all over the USA.
The group has been arbitrarily limited to less than forty dentists. The objective is to provide the membership an enhanced opportunity for learning and a unique level of personal interaction with the invited speakers.
Additionally, the organization is unconditionally committed to the growth and development of young dentists by exposing them to the best and the brightest in the field. To that end, it is common for recent graduates and General Practice Residents to be invited guests at our meetings.
The Cosmetic Consortium has sponsored many sold-out workshops and hands-on programs in a variety of disciplines, such as dental implant prosthetics, adhesive dentistry and porcelain veneers. Considering its past and current programs and its commitment to excellence, the future is indeed bright for this exceptional organization.

The Fourth Annual Leonard Abrams Memorial Lecture
"The Periodontal Biotypes Revisited and Their Impact on the Esthetic Outcomes of Implant Restorations"
With new information available today, it is relatively easy to predict esthetic outcomes based upon the type of periodontium. The tooth form, both the anatomic crown and root, plays a key role. Interestingly, the inclinations of the maxillary incisor roots also impact on the final result. These and other factors will be discussed.
Dr. Arnold Weisgold received his Dental degree from Temple University School of Dentistry. He continued his post-graduate studies at The University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine, where he received certification in Periodontics and Periodontal Prosthesis - Fixed Prosthodontics. Dr. Weisgold is currently Adjunct Professor of Periodontics, University of Pennsylvania, and former Director of Postdoctoral Periodontal Prosthesis (1973 – 2006). He was former Chairman, Department of Form and Function of the Masticatory System, Former Associate Dean for Clinical Sciences, and Past President, Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics.
Monday, October 19, 2009 Dr. Andrew Halbert
"Treatment Considerations in the Management of Patients with Congenitally Missing Teeth"
Though appearing relatively simple at first glance, the management of patients who are congenitally missing teeth requires understanding of a complex set of issues. Besides the well-known matter of not placing an implant prior to completion of growth, there are many factors which must be considered. When placing an implant, it is anticipated that this piece of titanium will be there a long time. Therefore, we will discuss the literature and selected clinical cases with an emphasis on:
Occlusion, and Progressive Changes Over Time
Shade Changes
Gingival Architecture and Changes over Time
Management of Appropriate Implant Components
Integration of Orthodontic Therapy
Dr. Andrew Halbert graduated from Georgetown University Dental School. He continued his education by completing a two year General Practice Residency at The Albert Einstein Medical Center, Department of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a Residency Program, earning specialty certification in Periodontics at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine. Subsequently he completed a Residency in Prosthodontics at Temple University School of Dentistry. He is currently Director of Restorative Dentistry at Albert Einstein Medical Center, and is in demand as a speaker and clinician in the Delaware Valley and across the US.
Monday, November 16, 2009 Dr. Jon Suzuki
“Current Concepts of Socket and Ridge Preservation”
Tooth extraction without concomitant socket grafting results in osseous deformities of the alveolar ridge, such as reduced height and width. This makes subsequent management of esthetics and implant placement very challenging. Socket grafting using a bone graft substitutes has been shown to significantly reduce the bone loss, better maintain the ridge dimensions and enhance the clinician’s ability to provide esthetically and functionally satisfying restorations at a later time. Oral and IV Bisphosphonates have been implicated in Osteonecrosis of the Jaw subsequent to dental extractions. Recommendations will be given to minimize post surgical complications in these dental patients. This course will help you understand site development principles and bone grafting protocols leading to the optimal foundation for esthetics and implant success.
Dr. Jon Suzuki has a Presidential Appointment as Professor of Microbiology and Immunology in the School of Medicine and Professor of Periodontology and Oral Implantology in the School of Dentistry at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. USA. He also serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Education, Research, and International Affairs as well as Director of Graduate Periodontology at Temple University. New Vistas in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: What’s Hot and What’s Not!
One of the most vexing problems faced by a dentist is the issue of nerve injuries to the jaws. Partial or complete numbness, "pins and needles," or “burning" sensation of the skin, is known as a paresthesia. Such manifestations are usually a symptoms related to a sensory nerve being damaged, diseased, or injured. The multiple causes of such injuries will be discussed as well as strategies for prevention and a flow chart for rapid management to obtain the best possible treatment outcome.
In addition to the foregoing, Dr. Taub will cover some of the exciting new and ground breaking techniques and procedures that they have developed to assist patients with special treatment needs.
Dr. Daniel Taub is Assistant Professor, Vice-Chair and Program Director, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Educated at Clark University, he obtained his dental degree from the University of Maryland Dental School. Subsequently he finished a General Practice Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Department of Dental Medicine, where he was named Outstanding Resident. Concomitant with his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University, he also obtained his MD Degree. He is a Diplomate of The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. In addition to his many other activities he was named 2008 “Operation Smile” Volunteer of the year. He has published multiple articles, edited a book and is in demand as a speaker across the US.
Monday, March 29, 2010 Dr. Brad Klassman
“Immediate Loading, Fact Or Fantasy: What We know, What We Think We Know, What Remains To Be Learned”
Still controversial, immediate loading of dental implants is gaining support from the dental profession. In well selected clinical cases, such as single units or small segmental restorations, the immediate placement, immediate load protocol, has gained popularity. Patient acceptance is enhanced with the prospect that immediate an tooth replacement is a viable possibility. Achieving predictability with this modality, is dependent on a clear understanding of the different biomechanics of specific implant systems. This knowledge encompasses how one system differs from the others, and which features favor a particular system for immediate placement. Selecting a system that fulfills the necessary criteria is essential. It has been postulated that the ability to use one abutment, placed at the time of initial implant surgery, and never having to remove it, may result in a more predictable tissue response, leading to a functional and cosmetically acceptable tooth replacement
Dr. Brad Klassman graduated Temple University School of Dentistry. Following a one year General Practice Residency at The Medical Center of Delaware (now Christiana Care Hospital), he attended the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine, obtaining his specialty certificate in Periodontics. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Periodontology, and is the youngest board certified Periodontist in the state of Delaware. He is a staff Periodontist at Christiana Care Hospital, Department of Dentistry. He is a full time practicing Periodontist in Wilmington, Delaware and his practice is limited to Implantology and Periodontics.
Friday, May 14, 2009 – All Day Meeting Dr. Mark Setter
“Thriving in an Uncertain Economy”
Uncertainty in the economy can have an affect on any business, and dentistry is no exception. Although no one has control over the economy itself, there are systems that can be put in place that maximize the potential of a dental practice.
Many businesses envy the position the dental profession has relative to a supply of clients seeking maintenance care, in that they are possible candidates for additional treatment. The key is having consistent systems, excellent verbal skills, and impressive customer service that will assure your patients’ willingness to invest in their own dental health. The entire dental team must learn the steps involved in turning untreated dental issues into wanted and needed services.
This program is the most direct path to getting your office to take the potential treatment that is in your file cabinet and making it treatment that is in your schedule. Your entire office team needs to participate in this program.
*** Member doctors, and their entire office teams, are invited to be our guests.
Dr. Mark K. Setter, DDS, MS graduated from the University of Michigan, receiving both a DDS degree and a Masters Degree in Periodontics.
