What are implant supported dentures?

Implant supported dentures are a form of tooth replacement, an alternative to traditional dentures and other dental solutions. They are fixed in place using dental implants that are inserted into the bone, providing structure and stability. These are an ideal solution for those who have lost multiple teeth and don’t have the structure to support other forms of dentures.

Designed to look like natural teeth, they are custom made for the wearer, matching the rest of their smile.

Who are they suitable for?

Implant supported dentures are suitable for patients who have lost a tooth or multiple teeth, and lack the supporting structure for traditional dentures. You can also benefit from dental implants if you wear a full set of dentures. Provided your jawbone can provide the support required, you should be able to benefit from dental implants.

An initial consultation with Dr. Brown will be able to determine your suitability, as well as answer any questions you might have about dental implants.

How do they work?

Implant supported dentures provide a long-term solution for patients. With a strong structure put in place, the denture can be brushed and cared for like normal teeth, removed when needed. Many people prefer implant supported dentures to traditional dentures, as they provide a better fit.

Dental implants can last a long time once fitted, and can last a lifetime with the right care.

What are the benefits of implant supported dentures?

There are multiple benefits that come with implant supported dentures that can help you decide if they’re the right for you. Some of the main benefits include:

IMPROVED CHEWING

Many people find that snap-on dentures make it difficult to chew. But implant supported dentures are fixed in place, making chewing a lot more comfortable. As an effective way of replacing missing teeth, you’ll be able to eat your favorite foods once again.

STABILITY AND STRENGTH

Because dental implants are fixed in place, they are much more stable than traditional dentures. This can boost your confidence if you’re concerned about dentures slipping or falling out while you’re talking or eating.

JAW PRESERVATION

After losing teeth, the jawbone can start to waste away as it’s no longer required to provide support to teeth. By having a dental implant fitted, which requires an implant fused to the bone, the bone retains its functionality.

NATURAL-LOOKING APPEARANCE

Dental implants are custom-made for the patient. As a made-to-measure solution, they will have a great fit and will be color-matched to the rest of the teeth. This makes them a more natural-looking alternative to other types of dentures, and will be difficult to identify by others.

NO ADHESIVE REQUIRED

Traditional dentures require adhesive to stay in place, which can be inconvenient and not always effective. As implant supported dentures snap into place thanks to the implant, you won’t have to worry about carrying adhesive around with you.

COMFORTABLE WEAR

Many patients with implant supported dentures find them a comfortable fit. In fact, many people who begin with more traditional dentures move on to an implanted supported denture to increase their comfort.

Dr. Brown will be more than happy to discuss the benefits of implant supported dentures with you, making sure that they’re the most appropriate solution for your needs.

How are they fitted?

Implant supported dentures are typically fitted over a couple of appointments, ensuring that the final result is as natural as possible. During the initial visit, you’ll be given an examination to determine whether or not this type of denture is the right choice for you. Dr. Brown will examine your jaw and use x-rays to help with his findings.

A bone graft may be required to ensure the jawbone is ready to receive a dental implant, which could mean there are several weeks between appointments to make sure you’re ready. Dr. Brown will also take an impression of your teeth to be able to create dental implants that fit your mouth.

The treatment site is then prepared, and the implants are fitted by Dr. Brown. It can take several weeks for the site to heal, so a temporary caps are put in place during this time. Once your implants have settled, a bridge will be fitted and customized to match the rest of your teeth.

During follow-up appointments, Dr. Brown will monitor the implants and look out for any signs of damage.
