Candidates for Dental Implants
In Philadelphia

Most of Dr. Brown’s patients who are considering dental implants are good candidates for it. Before getting dental implants however, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Healthy gums: If you have active periodontal disease, Dr. Brown will treat it before considering dental implants.
  • Sufficient bone: In order for dental implants to be successful, it is important that there is enough jawbone to anchor them. However, if you have lost a significant amount of bone, you can still be considered for implants after the bone is restored through bone grafting.
  • Healthy dental hygiene habits: In order to protect dental implants and the surrounding teeth, it is essential to brush and floss teeth at least twice a day.

Who is NOT a good candidate for dental implants?

While many patients are good candidates for dental implants, there are a handful of cases where dental implants are not recommended.

  • Children and adolescents: Because the jawbones of children and teenagers are still growing, they are not considered good candidates for dental implants.
  • Pregnancy: We recommend delaying any elective procedure, like dental implants, until after pregnancy.
  • Tobacco users: Because smoking interferes with the healing process and reduces the chance of a successful implant, patients will be required to give up smoking or other tobacco use for at least as long as it takes the implant site to heal and the post to integrate with the jawbone.
  • Abuse of alcohol or other substances: Aside from the possible complications to the healing process, substance abuse can interfere with your ability to care for the implant site and attend followup appointments.
  • Untreated bruxism: Grinding teeth will put stress on the dental implants and surrounding teeth, causing an increase risk of implant failure.
  • Certain medical conditions: Patients who are on certain medications, such as those that suppress the immune system, or patients who have received high-dosage radiation treatment on their neck and head should not consider dental implants. Additionally, patients with systematic problems or chronic conditions, such as, (but not limited to), hemophilia, diabetes, or connective tissue diseases, are not good candidates for dental implants.

If you have one or more of the above conditions, dental implants could still be a possibility for you. Before making any decisions, it’s important to control the condition as much as possible, and consult Dr. I. Stephen Brown about how your condition will impact the success of your dental implant.
